Student Expectations

Overview

What You Need to Know When Attending Coronado High School

Classroom Expectations

  • Coronado students are expected to work in class. If a student should choose not to work or sleep in class, they could be sent to the administration office.

  • Coronado does not put up with verbal abuse of staff. If a student should cuss at a staff member, they will go home on an out of school suspension.

DRESS CODE

Clothing for boys and girls must meet the following criteria:

  • No COOKIES apparel - clothing design to conceal marijuana and vape products.

  • Clothing must be worn as designed and cover all private parts of the body, to include midriff, back and butt.

  • Clothing must fit properly and does not expose undergarments (no sagging, no tube tops, etc.).  Bras are not considered shirts.

  • Clothing must be free of excessive holes, rips and tears that expose private areas of the body or undergarments.

  • Footwear must protect a student's feet; slippers and bare feet are not allowed.

  • Hats are allowed in the building and in the classrooms at the teachers’ discretion.

  • Clothing, paraphernalia, and jewelry must NOT contain inappropriate messages, reference sexually suggestive activity, drugs, alcohol, gangs, be obscene, profane, hateful, or disruptive to the learning environment.

  • Costumes, including face paint and masks, are not allowed. Variations of the dress code for extracurricular activities and school events must be approved by the principal.

  • Hoods may not be worn in the building.

CELL PHONE AND ELECTRONICS POLICY

  • Coronado Cell Phone Policy is classroom dependent.  Students may use electronics ONLY WITH EXPLICIT TEACHER PERMISSION during class periods.  All electronic devices must be silenced and out of sight (e.g. in backpack or locker), clothing pockets do NOT constitute as out of sight.  Students may NOT access their cell phones while on passes to the restroom, locker, drinking fountain, etc.

  • Each teacher determines cell phone usage in their classroom.  If the student does not follow the teacher’s rules and the student is sent to the office for a cell phone violation, the office will take the phone for the day and contact parents.  On the third time and all subsequent times in the office for cell phone usage, parents will be responsible to pick up the phone.

  • Students should not have devices on/in both ears inside the school buildings.  This is a safety issue.

  • Students are not allowed to be on their phones in the hallways during class time. Students could possibly be brought up to the administration office if they refuse to put their phones away while on a hallway pass. This is still considered class time.

  • We understand parental communication is important; however, parental contact will NOT be an excuse for using cell phones during class time.  In case of a family emergency, please contact your student through the main office at 719-328-3610.  Otherwise, students may check their messages between class periods or at lunch.

  • Students are not allowed to use any delivery service (Doordash, Grubhub, etc.) to order food during the day.

STUDENT DROP-OFF & PICK-UP

  • Students who provide their own transportation must complete a parking permit before being allowed to park on school property.  Please see a member of security for parking permit information.

  • Follow painted arrows for entrance and exit in the parking lot, drop-off and pick-up areas. Adhering to the pattern will greatly help us maintain safety, efficiently move vehicles through campus, enable pedestrians to cross safely, and reduce congestion in the parking lot and the drop-off zone.

  • For the safety of all, students, parents/guardians and guests must follow all safety signs, drive slowly and safely and avoid reckless behaviors.  Failure to do so may result in loss of parking privileges and/or a trespassing warning.

CORONADO ATTENDANCE POLICY

Students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently. It is difficult for the teacher and class to build their skills and progress if a large number of students are frequently absent.

  • Parents and guardians must excuse their students within 48 hours of the absence.

  • Students who come into class within the first 10 minutes will be marked as tardy.

  • Arriving after the first 10 minutes will be marked as an UNEXCUSED absence.

  • Chronic tardiness may result in detention or suspension and may become a serious discipline issue.

EXCUSING STUDENT ABSENCES ATTENDANCE LINE:

719-328-3613

Parents should excuse their student’s absence within 48 hours. Messages may be left (24/7) and should include:

• STUDENT’S NAME

• PARENT / GUARDIAN NAME

• CALLER’S RELATIONSHIP TO STUDENT

• DATE, REASON FOR ABSENCE, AND A PHONE NUMBER WHERE YOU CAN BE REACHED

If you need your student released early due to an appointment, please send a note with your student or call the attendance line. Notes should be brought to the attendance office before school or between classes. You can also call the attendance office a minimum of 1 hour in advance to request an early release. This allows us to page your student during passing periods and get a pass for the student to be released in time for their appointment, thereby reducing interruptions to classes.

CLOSED CAMPUS

In order to improve student achievement, student attendance, school safety and reduce the number of behavior and discipline issues, students in grades 9—12 are NOT allowed to ‘WALK’ off campus during the school day

This includes both lunch periods and all scheduled classes.

  • Students in grades 10—12 may ’DRIVE’ off campus during their scheduled lunch period.

  • Freshmen students may NOT leave campus at ANY point of the day, unless picked up and excused by a parent or guardian.

  • Students are not allowed to order food (Doordash, Grubhub, etc.) for lunch time.
